 Home Spa Maintenance Basics
Spas are designed to constantly clean the water through filtration and any algae presence in the tub is killed with proper sanitizer levels. Draining and thorough cleaning of your spa should only be necessary about every 3-6 months depending on amount of spa usage and if water is properly balanced and consistently maintained.

At Take A Break Spas & Billiards we take your spa service needs seriously and offer premium quality products at guaranteed lowest affordable prices.  Our friendly staff will happily assist you with any questions and offer unlimited advice based on experience, technical education, industry knowledge and scientific research.  If you are not certain as to the suitability of a particular product, consult your dealer, your owner’s manual and manufacturer’s product labeling to insure you have the very best spa experience.   Take A Break, Call Us today!  801-489-6005

Acrylic Spa Shell

To preserve the sheen of your spa’s surface, it is crucial that you avoid using abrasive cleaners products which may have adverse chemical effects.  It’s easy to give your spa a clean look with the reusable Spa Pad made from crushed walnut shells for gentle, yet strong removal of heavy dirt and grime and it won’t scratch acrylic or other spa surfaces.  Other abrasive scrubbing devices may damage spa so always test any product on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure compatibility.  A mild degreasing cleaner can be used such as CitraBright, formulated with the natural cleaning power of citrus for the toughest grease and grime.

Deeper cleaning and polishing can be done to help protect the spa finish. Fast Gloss has been especially designed for hot tubs and spas for a protective coating unaffected by sunlight, temperature or chemicals.  Plexus cleans and polishes with an easy spray on, wipe off quick application plus it actually seals the pores of the plastic making scratches less visible.

Prevent scale formation on spa surfaces, heaters, piping and equipment and stains caused by iron, copper and manganese with Stain & Scale Control  or Defender.  Some existing stains can be removed by brushing the stain with the Spa Pad after the application of a Stain & Scale Control product.  Regardless of what cleanser is used, use extreme care to assure that NO SOAP RESIDUE is left on the surface.  This could cause severe sudsing when refilled.

Grit, Sand & Debri Removal

Prevention of debri entering your spa is simple with a door mat or a Handi-Step at the entrance to keep out annoying grit, sand and particles that accumulate because of their weight at the bottom of the spa or pool.  We are sold on the simplicity and ease of using The Spa Vac without the need  of pumping or water hook-ups!  It easily picks even the heavier debri such as rocks, pennies, marbles down to finer particles of beach sand.

Filter Cartridges

Cleaning the spa filter cartridge is the most vital factor to the overall health of your water.  Depending on the amount of spa usage you may need to only clean your filter once a month. Instant Cartridge Clean is a fast-acting spray & rinse formula with color indicator to insure complete coverage of your filter.  It is formulated to provide a quick and easy way to remove scale, minerals, oils, lotins and other debris from cartridge filters.

For deep cleanings we recommend a using a degreasing soak Filter Clean by adding it to 4 gallons of water to make a solution for soaking overnight or atleast three hours and allowing the cartridge to dry before re-installing.  Many people find it helpful to keep an extra filter(s) on hand to trade out during cleanings. Use of a Water-Wand hand held cartridge cleaning tool can reduce filter cleaning time by more than 50% with no messy spray back cleaning 8 pleats at a time in one simple action.

Jets & Plumbing

Before draining your spa or jetted tub, add Jet Clean a formula that helps prevent build-up of organics, oils, dirt and minerals in plumbing that can restrict water flow and damage equipment. When refilling spa water add a full 16 oz. bottle of  Metal Gon to prevent iron, copper and other minerals from staining spa surfaces and buildup in plumbing (Metal Gon is not recommended with mineral sanitizers, use Defender for scale prevention).

Covers

Spa covers are made with durable marine grade vinyl and their life expectancy can easily double with minimal care and product application. Cover Care & Conditioner cleans & shines while forming a protective shield on your spa cover repels water, dust & dirt. To prolong the life of the cover, handle it with care and clean regularly using mild soap & water.  Periodic treatments with a conditioning cleaner like 303 Aerospace Protectant will protect against deterioration caused by UV rays from the sun and repel dust, dirt & cuts through built-up grime to keep your cover looking new.

Using an insulated cover will significantly reduce your operating costs, heat-up time and maintenance requirements.  We offer replacement Custom Made Covers starting at just $329 with feature options to help with your particular needs such as thicker foam to handle heavy snow and increase energy efficency or reinforced hinge to help minimize damage caused by rough guests.

Cover Lifters help ease muscle strains and are designed for one person to operate easily.

Receive 10% discount on any in-stock cover lifter with the purchase of a new cover when you mention this offer.

Pillows

Often the first signs of any spa surface deterioration will be noticed with the pillows from lack of regular removal and cleanings.  Simply remove and clean as needed with soapy water using a cloth or soft-bristle brush.  NEVER machine wash pillows (or filters!) and use extreme care to assure that no soap residue is left on the surface.  To maintain water resistance and luster, apply a quality vinyl conditioner like 303 Aerospace Protectant once a month. ALWAYS remove the pillows when adding chemical shock treatment to the water.  Pillows can be returned to the spa when the sanitizer reading drops below 4.0 ppm.
